It is typically characterised by three qualities:<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p><em>The essence of haiku is &#8220;cutting&#8221; (kiru). This is often represented by the juxtaposition of two images or ideas and a <a title=\"Kireji\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kireji\">kireji<\/a> (&#8220;cutting word&#8221;) between them<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p><em>Traditional haiku consist of 17 <a title=\"On (Japanese prosody)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/On_%28Japanese_prosody%29\">on<\/a> (also known as <a title=\"Mora (linguistics)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mora_%28linguistics%29\">morae<\/a> though often loosely translated as &#8220;syllables&#8221;), in three phrases of 5, 7, and 5 on respectively.<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Haiku#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p><em>A <a title=\"Kigo\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kigo\">kigo<\/a> (seasonal reference), usually drawn from a <a title=\"Saijiki\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saijiki\">saijiki<\/a>, an extensive but defined list of such words.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Wikipedia<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>An old silent pond&#8230;<br \/>\nA frog jumps into the pond,<br \/>\nsplash! Not the forest.
